What are you doing for Spring Break?

March 27, 2009 · Filed Under money saving ideas · Comment

I just realized that my elementary boys have two weeks off for Spring/Easter break. We work so hard during the school year that we want to give them a nice treat. Money’s tight so what do you do? We thought of a fishing trip, Universal Studios, drive somewhere and stay in a hotel for a couple nights. Relax, get away from the busy hubbub.

I remembered a friend telling me about this vrbo.com, Vacations Rental by Owners. They offer places all over the world to rent. There was a place in North Shore, Oahu for $125/night. The great thing is that there are testimonials and reviews from people who have stayed at the properties. That’s always nice to read, a lot of times you can’t really trust the pictures that are posted.

I’m going to do my research and check other places too: Cheapflights.com, priceline.com, HomeAway.com

Anyone know of other sites?

Don’t Feel Pressured…

My husband had to meet with another business friend yesterday, it was about lunch time.

My husband told him that he didn’t really have the money to take him out to a *good* lunch so they got a couple of sandwiches at Subway. My husband even used a discount card that one of the guys at the office gave him.

My husband shared the story with me and told me that the guy really appreciated that.

We need to be good stewards of the money, of the companies, of the “stuff” that we have.

Sometimes we find ourselves thinking we need to impress other business people. Sometimes we find ourselves not being able to say no to dinner to that friend who doesn’t come into town a lot.  Sometimes we find ourselves donating money to a cause when we really can’t afford to.

I think if we’re all honest to each other, it relieves a lot of pressure and I think that people really appreciate it. I think we would be all helping each other.

Our economy is tough now. Lots of people are in a situation right now that is really scary, that don’t know how they’re going to pay the next mortgage, how they’re going to manage all that they put on our plates. A lot of us have lost our jobs, have lost money in our retirement fund or the money market. Take a look at our states’ unemployment rate, our foreclosures and our state budget deficit. We’re hurting.

Believe me, it’s ok to tell people the truth about where you’re at, about how you’re hurting. I think you’ll be surprised at how many other people are in the same boat and didn’t want to say.  We’re all in this together!

Redbox

How many out there know about Redbox? They look like coke machines and they put them in stores like Albertson’s, Walmart, etc? I’m sure if you go to the website, they’ll have a place where you can locate the nearest store for you?

I love Redbox. DVD rentals are $1!!!! Rentals are due the next day by 9pm and the other great thing is that you can return them at any Redbox, you don’t have to go to the exact same one where you rented it.

There is a signup where you can enter your cell number and they’ll give you a code so that you can get free rentals on Monday. I’m sure they’re doing it for advertisement purposes but it’s worth some rentals.

I just received an update where they’re offering you free Wednesday rentals. I guess they’re trying to promote their blog. Every Wednesday you visit the blogsite and they’ll give you a code for a free rental.

Free Rentals on Monday AND Wednesday. Now that’s a deal.

My husband and I were wondering who is going to be the first to name their child, “Google”.
